Tweed District Junior Cricket Association
The Revamp
Tweed District Junior Cricket Association (T.D.J.C.A., Tweed District) approached us to overhaul their uniforms apparel and logo, signifying a new era for cricket in Northern NSW. Like all our custom designs we wanted their new uniforms to have a connection to both the team and the region they play in. This led to our first major design cues. The Beach and Mt Warning. Both prominent figures in any Tweed Coast residents life.
These two defining landscape features led to our first design. It utilized the classic T.D.J.C.A. colors of maroon and Yellow on a white base, a must if playing in the sun all day. A silhouette of Mt Warning was placed on the shoulder to signify wearing the region “on your sleeve” which implies all the players and staff are proud to be apart of the community and club. the second detail is the introduction of the dune graphic which represents the sprawling beaches and uneven coastline that makes the Tweed Coast area so iconic.
Logo Redesign
Along side the jersey redesign we were asked to redo the T.D.J.C.A logo with the original featuring a full golden design featuring the aforementioned Mt Warning and its surrounding hilly environment all placed on a Maroon background. Simplistic and effective. Yet it was often described as “boring” or “generic” by members close to the team. So we decided we wanted to create a logo that embodies not only where the players in the come from but also where they aspire to go.
The New logo features a distinct shield shaped border and a cricket ball placed in the foreground. This is reminiscent of the one found on both the NSW cricket logo and the national Australian team’s. This creates a visual cue for those who aspire to become professional players. Another key design feature is that of the sunrise behind Mt Warning. This is important because due to its altitude and proximity to the coast Mt Warning is the first place in continental Australia to see the sun of a morning. This sentiment of being up with the sun has always been associated with hard work and long hours thus suggesting that everyone involved within the organisation is willing and prepared to put in the extra time needed to take either themselves or the team to the next level.
While this design was well received by both players and coaches a common critique was that it was quite generic and given the sublimating abilities of our manufacturing partner RJR sports, we decided to go a little bit crazier and recreate an iconic Tweed Coast moment. A sunrise on the summit of Mt Warning. capturing this moment led to the creation of our second design. Internally nicknamed the “Sunrise shirt”
While this design set out to be different from the beginning the response was somewhat luke-warm. So we began work on a third variation, one that embodied the tweed coast lifestyle with its simplistic yet understated looks but still represented all that the team stands for. Working off this idea we wanted to keep the rising sun and the mountain in the center of the chest but also incorporate the dune graphic and the classic colors of the Tweed District Junior Cricket Association. This was the result.
This design was met with overwhelming approval as it stuck the correct balance between contemporary design ques that call back to the local area while maintaining a striking modern look. This is why we have chosen this design going forward as the template we will use for the next Tweed District Junior Cricket Association jersey.
The training shirt was based off the playing kit, combining the classic Maroon and Gold pallet with the photo real look of the V2 jersey. Thus creating a shirt that is undeniably Tweed District.
Upon review it was discovered that the T.D.J.C.A. has no historical links to the “traditional” maroon and gold colouring. So it was decided from 2020 onward the Tweed District Junior Cricket association will use the colours of the Tweed Shire Region. They are as follows;
The Task was then posited to McDowell Design to create a new look uniform that adhered to the new colour pallet. With this new found freedom we were able to create a uniform that properly represented the Tweed District. The “Sky” behind the mountain is a combination of the classic gold colour found in the old Tweed District uniforms fading into a combination of the “river” and “ocean” blues. This is then supplemented by the “sand” colour on the sleeve tips and dune design on the lower part of the jersey. This is topped off with a rendition of the majestic Mt Warning done in the “Forrest” green.
Accessories
The cap design was straight forward. Utilising the clean colour pallet it creates a striking yet understated look. We deliberately left the cap without a pattern in order to emphasise the T.D.J.C.A logo announcing to the opposition “We are Tweed.”
The Training shorts use similar design cues to the playing shirt tying it all together in one cohesive package. This is to ensure the kit can be worn on and off the field.
